Get Wild on the Water – The Best Aquatic Activities on the Gold Coast
Gold Coast is home to some of the best beaches in Queensland. You have pristine beaches in almost every suburb including Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Tallabudgera, Mermaid Beach, Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads among others. Naturally, locals living near the waterways have become adventurous with what you can one do in the water apart from taking a swim.
If you're looking to push your boundaries in the surf, here are the best water activities on Gold Coast that we could find.

Of course this is at the top of our list. The waters of the Gold Coast are famous for its waves and some say that they're better for surfing than swimming (with exceptions for beaches with calmer waters). So when you get bored lounging under the sun and want to get some more action, get a board and ride the waves! January to April are the months with the best swells but any time of the year is good for casual surfers.
Can’t surf yet? Surfers Paradise is lined up with surf schools that can teach you the basics in an hour or two.
Rent a Round Boat
Often mistaken as inflatables, round boats are actually made with fibreglass and are quite luxurious. It’s a super fun way to coast the waters with your whole family or your entire group of friends -- each boat can seat up to 10 adults! And you can bring your own food on board to turn it into a real party.
While one of you have to drive the boat, expert staff of the Coasting Around Boat Hire are always nearby to assist you.
The sea isn’t the only water on the Gold Coast. There are also rivers and canals. The best way to explore them? By joining the Surfers Paradise River Cruise. From morning to sunset, you and your friends can enjoy a cruise complete with cocktails or cold beer (morning tea and snacks for day cruises!). See where the rich and famous of Queensland live as your guide provides entertaining commentary.
Humpback whales have been crusing the waters of the Gold Coast for a long time and you don’t need to be especially lucky to get a sighting either -- they show up most days during whale season, which is May through to November! All you need to do is to find a boat that goes to where they are or get up to a high point with some excellent views. There are a couple of whale watching operators on the Gold Coast that do the tours daily and their boats depart from different areas (some from Surfers Paradise and some from Mariner’s Cove).
You don’t need to go to Venice for a gondola ride -- the Gold Coast has its very own! Take a romantic boat ride through the canals of Main Beach and Surfers Paradise. The fancy ride has plush seats and you can choose to include food and drinks if you like! The gondola rides vary from 30-minute quick tours to 2-hour cruises.
Go on a sunset safari
If you can’t decide on just one activity -- then the sunset safari is for you. These guided tours will take you to the Gold Coast’s best natural attractions: the reefs, the rainforests, and more. It’s the easiest way to fulfill your adventure fantasies without going insane planning everything.
Jet Boat Ride
If you are looking for a quick thrill in the water, then look no further than Ocean Jet Boating. Feel the rush as your boat zips over the waves of the Pacific Ocean, all while you are safely strapped into your comfortable seat. You'll be warm and dry but completely exhilarated. The jetboat also spins around the Broadwater, giving you an extreme 360-view of the Gold Coast’s famous skyscrapers.
Want more of the skyscrapers? Ocean Jet also offers Helitours along with their jetboat adventures! The helicopter tour will take you over Royal Pines, Broadbeach, then to the shores of Surfers Paradise, Sea World and South Stradbroke Island.
